Francesca Pratt explains how rethinking layouts, enhancing flow and embracing creative ideas reshaped her family home, along with the styling tips she recommends for any space
If your home is in need of a refresh, you don鈥檛 need to spend thousands of pounds on interior design. For Francesca Pratt, founder of , beautiful homes often begin by reimagining what you already own. 鈥淓verybody has something in their home that can be moved around or repurposed to improve their space,鈥� she explains. While her services range from quick consultations to full-scale refurbishments, her philosophy centres on cost-effective transformations. 鈥淲ith clients, I work collaboratively to recycle what they already have, suggest easy ways to introduce colour and texture, and focus on inexpensive changes that make a real difference.鈥�
That eye for detail is evident throughout her own home, The Grange, now on the market for the first time in 13 years. Positioned on the edge of the charming Dorset village of Marnhull, the six-bedroom house, built from local sandstone, is as distinctive as it is inviting. “The attic was one of the reasons I fell in love with it. My children loved the idea of being up there, creating their own den,” she says.
Francesca offers a simple piece of advice for anyone moving into a new property. 鈥淎ll your friends will want to see your new house. You should let them, on one condition: that they give you one honest thing about the house that bothers them and that they would change.鈥�
Her own journey with The Grange began with tackling the structural 鈥渂lockages鈥� that disrupted its flow. 鈥淓very room should flow naturally, like a stream, into the next.鈥� In the main bedroom, she moved doors to create a greater sense of privacy. A large children鈥檚 bathroom became two separate spaces for added practicality, and the attic was reconfigured to accommodate two bedrooms and bathrooms. 鈥淚 hadn鈥檛 anticipated doing all of that at first - I had mainly planned on renovating the master bathroom - but once I lived here, I could see which spaces were wrongly laid out.鈥�
The bathroom is a perfect example of Francesca’s intuitive approach. Its freestanding bathtub sits in front of a striking mosaic inspired by Van Gogh’s Almond Blossoms. “I saw a picture in a Royal Academy brochure and later found a wonderful mosaic company in Chelsea Harbour that could bring it to life on a large scale,” she recalls. “I placed the bathtub in the centre of the room so it would have a beautiful view across the garden.”
The outdoor space, too, became a passion project, its almost three acres transformed after an inspirational visit to Highgrove, the private residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “There was barely a flower when we arrived, just one rosebush,” she remembers. “I created rooms in the garden in much the same way I do in a house, designing areas that feel private and cosy.” The result is a versatile landscape: a treehouse, zipwire, heated swimming pool and tennis/pickleball court for younger visitors, balanced by elegant entertaining areas where adults can relax through summer and into the autumn, when evergreen plants bloom with rich, earthy tones.
With her children now 25 and 26 and living across the globe, Francesca is preparing to downsize. “One thing I’ll miss most is coming down the stairs every morning. Halfway down there’s this enormous window, and I always stop to take in the view.”
Make a memorable first impression with flowers
鈥淚deally ones from your garden, or from a good florist. At Christmas, choose arrangements with rich seasonal colours and berries.鈥�
Set the mood with lighting
鈥淓very light switch should ideally be on a dimmer - it鈥檚 easy to do. Soft lighting and scented candles help create atmosphere, and rechargeable lamps are a versatile way to add cosy lighting.鈥�
Think about guest comfort
鈥淚t鈥檚 the small details that make a stay enjoyable. Provide a bolster pillow so guests can comfortably read their phone or the newspaper. In the bathroom, ensure there鈥檚 a small table or shelf so they can unpack their toiletries.鈥�
Keep the entrance tidy
鈥淭he hall creates the first impression, so make sure there鈥檚 space for guests鈥� coats and jackets, not just your own, and somewhere to store their boots or shoes out of the way.鈥�
Never leave a table bare
鈥淲hether it鈥檚 candles, flowers or decorative objects, no dining or kitchen table should be empty. The festive season is the perfect time to have fun with a striking centrepiece.鈥�
